In water-based coatings, the resin acts as the backbone of the film, determining the coating’s base performance. However, when water resistance, wet-rub color fastness, and chemical resistance are required, linear resin molecules alone often cannot deliver the desired level of performance.

This is where a crosslinker comes into play. By forming chemical bonds between polymer chains, it creates a densely crosslinked three-dimensional network, transforming the coating from a simple film-forming layer into a durable, high-performance finish.

Why Choose a Blocked Isocyanate Crosslinker?

Various types of crosslinkers are available to meet different application needs. Technical Control offers a plenty of crosslinking solutions, including the carbodiimide series (Carbolinker®) and blocked isocyanate crosslinkers, designed to accommodate different curing conditions and performance requirements. Among them, blocked isocyanate crosslinkers are particularly favored in textile applications for their excellent balance of environmental performance, ease of processing, and final performance.

Resistant to premature reaction: Unlike conventional isocyanates, which readily react with water and therefore must be mixed immediately before use, blocked isocyanates contain temporarily blocked –NCO groups that remain stable at room temperature. This enables pre-formulation into one-component systems with extended shelf life and greater formulation flexibility.

Safer and more environmentally friendly: Formaldehyde-free, contains no free isocyanates, and features a low-odor formulation, making it safer for operators and more environmentally friendly.

Dense crosslinking for superior performance: After thermal curing (typically above 120°C), the blocked –NCO groups are deblocked, releasing reactive isocyanate groups that readily react with hydroxyl, amino, and other functional groups in the resin or fibers to form a high-density crosslinked network. This significantly improves water resistance, wet-rub color fastness, and anti-yellowing performance.

Technical Control Isolink PCI is an HDI-based aliphatic blocked isocyanate crosslinker that employs DMP blocking technology.
